How Wide Should MTB Handlebars Be? Find Your Ideal Handlebar Width

Struggling to get around tight switchbacks? Do you stiffen up when the trail gets really steep? Neck or wrist pain? Or have you been fighting for months to get your front wheel up into a manual?
Of course, this can be a mountain bike technique problem. But there is another possibility that is often overlooked:
Your MTB handlebars may simply be too wide for you.
As a full-time mountain bike skills coach, I see this surprisingly often — especially in shorter riders and petite women.
Yes, shorter riders need narrower handlebars, BUT, handlebars shouldn't only fit your height, they should also fit your bike and body geometry!
In other words:
Your handlebar should fit YOUR proportions, YOUR bike and the way YOU use it.
The problem is, however, that many riders use a handlebar that doesn't fit them, it fits an imaginary “average rider”.

But before you grab the saw, let’s understand why handlebar width matters in the first place.
Are wider MTB Handlebars Automatically Better?
Well, no. But yes, a wider handlebar does have advantages.
First off: Why do modern mountain bikes come with wide bars?
There are 2 reasons for this:
The manufacturer doesn't know who will eventually buy the bike. Since it's easier to CUT the bars than to make them wider, it's better to equip the bike with wider bars.
Yes, a wider bar usually feels more stable!
What are the advantages of wider bars on a MTB?
A wider handlebar gives you a longer lever. Think back to physics class: the longer the lever, the less force you need to create the same torque.
On a mountain bike, this can make it easier to stabilize the front wheel and resist forces trying to turn the handlebars. Especially at speed and in rough terrain, a wider bar can therefore feel reassuringly stable.
So does that mean wider = better?
No.
Because stability is only one side of the equation.
You also need maneuverability and enough range of motion to actually move your bike underneath you.
The ideal MTB handlebar width therefore isn't the widest bar you can fit through the trees.
The ideal handlebar width is a compromise between:
leverage and stability
steering freedom
range of motion
your body proportions
your bike geometry
your riding style and terrain
How Can You Tell If Your MTB Handlebars Are Too Wide?
There isn’t one symptom that proves your handlebars are too wide.
But there are some situations where I would definitely take a closer look at your cockpit setup:
You struggle to create enough steering angle in very tight corners or switchbacks.
Your outside arm feels completely stretched when steering strongly.
Your handlebar comes very close to (or even touches) your knee often.
You feel strangely restricted when the trail becomes steep.
You struggle to create enough fore-aft movement on the bike.
Front wheel lifts or manuals feel as if you simply “run out of room”.
You are a smaller rider on a bike that came with a very wide stock handlebar.
You have wrist and neck pain often.
Again: these problems can have many causes. So please don’t cut 40 mm off your handlebars and send me the bill if your switchbacks still aren't perfect. 😁 Instead, work on them with my switchbacks course 🤓
Back to the topic: If you're experiencing one or several of those symptoms, bar width is absolutely worth checking.
Why Handlebar Width Can Limit Your Range of Motion
Here is a simple experiment you can do right now. Stand close to a wall and place both fists in front of you. First, keep your fists relatively close together. Now move them farther and farther apart.
What happens?
The wider your hands move, the farther your fists move away from the wall.
And a similar thing happens on your mountain bike. The farther apart your hands are, the more your arm position can limit how far your body and bike can move relative to each other.
Now those few centimeters may sound irrelevant.
On a trail, they can be anything but irrelevant.
Imagine riding into a very steep section. Your bike changes angle underneath you while you try to maintain control of your body over your support base.
Or think about initiating a manual: you need enough horizontal movement to accelerate the bike forward underneath you while allowing your body mass to move rearward relative to the bike.
If your cockpit position reduces that usable movement by several centimeters, you may literally reach your anatomical end range before the movement is complete.

Why Wide Handlebars Can Make Tight Switchbacks Harder
There is another limitation that is even easier to see. Turn your handlebars sharply while standing on the bike. At some point, these two things can happen:
Your inside knee gets in the way, and your outside arm reaches full extension.
And the wider the handlebar is relative to your proportions, the earlier these restrictions will occur.
And this brings us to one of the biggest problems with universal handlebar-width recommendations.
What Is the Ideal MTB Handlebar Width for Women?
Search for the “ideal handlebar width for women” and you will find plenty of formulas.
Many are mostly based on height. And honestly, they are useless for most women who don't fit the male stereotypical body! (For me the recommendation was 64 cm 🙄)
Handlebar Recommendation Based on Height Alone Are Incomplete!
Why? Well, two people of the same height can have different shoulder widths, arm lengths and torso proportions.
Research supports this problem. A study comparing men and women of the same height found that some of the clearest differences between the sexes occurred in shoulder width. In other words: stature alone does not tell you everything you need to know about the dimensions that influence bike fit.
A broader cycling-biomechanics review likewise recommends using factors such as anthropometrics and flexibility to guide initial bicycle configuration, followed by dynamic assessment to fine-tune the setup.
Even more interestingly, a 2025 controlled study specifically examining handlebar width in female cyclists found that changing handlebar width altered upper-body muscle activation and hip movement. The authors concluded that anatomical characteristics should be considered when selecting handlebar width.
A VERY important caveat:
That study was not an MTB study and used much narrower cycling handlebars, so you cannot take its recommended measurements and apply them to your mountain bike.
But it reinforces an important principle:
Handlebar width changes biomechanics, and body proportions matter.
That is also why “you are 160 cm tall, therefore your bars should be X millimeters wide” is too simplistic for me. And it certainly doesn’t mean all women should ride the same narrow bar.
A tall woman with long arms and broad shoulders may need considerably wider handlebars than a petite man with narrow shoulders.
Fit the bike to the individual, not the gender stereotype.

The number the calculator gives you is not an absolute truth. Your mobility, riding style, terrain, preferences and the rest of your cockpit setup matter too. Handlebar rise, backsweep, upsweep, stem length and bike geometry all affect how your position feels.
Science supports this broader approach too: cycling biomechanics is an interaction between rider and bicycle rather than a matter of changing one isolated measurement.
Can MTB Handlebars Be Too Narrow?
Absolutely.
If you followed this article thinking: “Great! Narrower = more maneuverability. Where's my saw?” Put it down. 😁
A narrower handlebar gives you a shorter lever. That means you need more force to resist the same steering torque, which can make the bike feel more nervous or demanding, particularly at higher speeds and in rough terrain.
So we are NOT searching for the narrowest possible MTB handlebar.
We are searching for your personal sweet spot:
Enough width for leverage and stability + enough freedom for movement and maneuverability.
Before You Cut Your MTB Handlebars
If our calculator tells you your ideal starting point may be 40 or even 60 mm narrower than your current handlebars, please do not immediately cut off the full amount.
You know the old saying:
Measure twice, cut once.
I would add:
Calculate once, TEST several times, then cut.
If your cockpit allows it, move your grips and brake levers inward first.
Ride somewhere familiar and consequence-free.
Pay attention to:
tight steering
steep terrain
front wheel lifts
your available body movement
stability at speed
how much effort you need to control the front wheel
Then adjust progressively.
Because shortening your handlebars is easy.
Gluing 20 mm back onto each side is considerably more challenging. 😁 (Or expensive)
